I disagree with the headline with every atom of my physical existence.
If you want to have a six-figure income and a three-digit square footage to live in, then sure! (If that barracks room you had as an E-2 seemed a little TOO spacious, then Silicon Valley/SF on the west coast or NYC on the east are your best bets, yeah.)

I'm in tech, and when I look at a map, my eyes are drawn to Austin, Dallas, and Raleigh.

Now, if you want to work remote, and if a company in California is willing to pay you California income in your remote site (assuming a lower-cost locale), then yeah, sure, go for it. But I turn down invitations to interview for positions in San Francisco or Silicon Valley. I'd love to live near mountains, but California - no way.

Bingo on the Texas Thing! I know 3 different groups in Texas that are Programming Centers I dealt with over the past 20 years and None of them are unhappy with their choice! 2 out of three are divorced because the love their work too much but thats another story!
