It seems its only the Navy that one has to forever wear the mark of a time period they had some problems and be branded forever. We all know that from time to time people mess up but once the problem has been corrected wear that " Red Stripe. " like a "Scarlet Letter," forever ? Yes, proper discipline and order is needed but other services don't see fit to brand those that didn't tow the line at one point in their career. I've never been in the Navy although My Dad and My Mom's aunt were but I'd of course be interested in how navel Veterans feel about this.
My Dad wasn't in long enough to get gold strips but My Mom's aunt was and spent 30 years on active duty and retired as a CPO. She had a lot of Gold on her left arm ! My Dad did reach the rank of ET1 but left the USN with 11 years service. One thing that changed His mind about staying in despite the fact He was ready to put on ETC rank was getting married, and having a young son, Me. He was a Veteran of WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations and got recalled to active duty for Korea. ( He didn't however to to Korea but to Pearl Harbor NS, Hawaii for three years. where My mother and I joined Him as Military dependents ) during that time period.

I wasn't enlisted long enough to get gold. My Academy room mate's father was a Master Chief, and I remember seeing his dress blues with gold running down the sleeve. Great role model.

LT Brad McInnis - It is impressive, I remember MY Mom's aunt, a CPO with all the gold hash marks, if She stayed beyond the 30 She served I don't know where the next was going though, She was running out of arm.
