I've always thought that the indigenous tribes of North America, in a martial sense, deserve the same respect the "Highlander" regiments receive in the UK forces. I mean, for starters, there's the obvious parallels of historic wrongs set against more recent contributions to our military heritage. Second, just like those stout-hearted Scots, the Native American heritage tends to stand out as something exemplary. If one wants to get into the deepest of the weeds on this one, I'd go so far as to suggest that (if we can leave the past where it often belongs) warriors such as Chief Joseph and Sitting Bull deserve as much respect as "American Generals" as the men in blue who opposed them. Perhaps not a popular opinion, but it's what I feel.
