Anyone who has been in the military long has served under a Queeg, a paranoid tyrant that thinks that only he is fit to lead and all around him or underminers or fools. I have had the misfortune to serve under three of them, the most recent one being the worst. I had a staff officer in Afghanistan who had tried very hard to get out of the deployment due to a thyroid condition (treatable by medication) who felt threatened that I was aware of her machinations. I had a battalion commander who I was aware had been relieved from company command years before, who was profane and overly familiar with the troops, and paranoid and easily manipulated by people who played into his paranoia. And finally I had another Battalion Commander who did so many things to disrupt the unit that it is still feeling the effects four years later. He was a quintessential Queeg, who if I had to pick one worst element (there are many) of his personality and style would be his propensity to lie about his exploits in Iraq around subordinates. Tales of a CA field grade officer who goes off alone in Baghdad to entrap his conniving interpreter and stab him in an alley aren't just BS, it would be illegal if true and dangerous if it seems to be something one should do when faced with a situation.

We face a choice when confronted with this. Work to support our leaders appointed over us, or talk jive behind their back and be less than enthusiastic (shall we say) about executing their policies.
The right answer is found in the NCO Creed: "I will be loyal to those with whom I serve, Seniors, peers, and subordinates..." It might make you feel better to talk shit about the tool that has been appointed over you, especially when they don't return that loyalty to subordinates. But I can attest that the damage this does to a unit far outlasts the tenure of the offending leader.
