I agree with the author on the lawlessness aspect of his article. We are witnessing that now along with the shifting of populations. I don't think it gets kinetic though. examples: What if transportation and distribution systems simply bypassed Sanctuary Cities. How long can a sanctuary city feed itself? What if all coal shipments by rail were diverted to non Sanctuary city sponsoring locations? Water from the Colorado River diverted away from California? There is a way to conduct warfare without the needless and indiscriminate loss of life. Tequila Junction: 4th-Generation Counterinsurgency written by H John Poole is a good book to read on this subject.

You're right, it is a good long read. I suspect the federal government would be very reluctant to use nuclear weapons or other mass casualty devices against citizens since that would likely increase the armed resistance on the other side. If it came down to it, I suspect the citizens and states would win this one.
