Here in VA, there is no duty to retreat if you aren't the aggressor or partly to blame for the conflict. If you are partly to blame, you must cease any assault, "retreat to the wall," and declare you want peace.
Use of deadly force requires reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm, and is not permitted to protect property.
If someone breaks into your home, same standard of reasonable fear of life or great bodily harm applies.
A DA with an agenda can cause you hell, but, as the saying goes, better judges by 12, than carried by 6.

We have prosecutors like that idiot in New Jersey as well. There was the prosecutor who offered Shaneen Allen a "deal" of only 3 years in prison for a guilty plea to a felony, that of entering New Jersey in possession of a pistol with only a Pennsylvania carry permit. As if crossing the Delaware river turned her from a peaceable citizen into a blood-crazed murderer.
One good point about our previous governor was the pardons he granted to people like Shaneen Allen, who were trapped by the idiotic gun laws written by fools.
Our present governor would probably ask for the death penalty.
