Great article on Army and their approach to physical fitness. However fit our military is I feel the pinnacle in regards to military readiness goes back to the Spartans. Spartan training began for men at a very young age. At seven years old, Spartan males were sent to military and athletic training school where they were taught toughness, discipline, pain endurance and survival skills. Would love to see today's generation live life as a Spartan me included.

Thank you for this article. Implementation is key. Can all units abstain the equipment, and sustain this type of readiness. Active component, Guard, and Reserves will face many challenges. While I applaud the change in the fitness test/evaluations, it has been proven time and again that units who are not able to train to these standards routinely have a much higher injury rate than others. I only hope the the CSM’s and Commanders make fitness a priority providing ample time for training throughout the daily routine. It cannot be left solely to the section chief and Platoon leadership to figure it out. Thank you for your service.

Excellent article. I came in right at the end of the post Vietnam era APFT and now seeing my second change. They’ve tried several other time to change, but now are successful I think. I’m retiring, but think the new test will work out well in the long run!
