Thank you, my friend LTC (Join to see) for sharing the perspective.
I concur with pour friend PO1 William "Chip" Nagel's assessment about the risk to the Kurds.
1. Turkey was thorn in the side of Europe since the first millennia. Their alignment with the Central Powers in the Great War, was the opportunities for the western powers to dismantle their empire and reward those who helped their efforts by making them kings of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, and the Gulf States.
2. IMHO Turkey is feeling their oats and working to weaken Saudi Arabia and become the new dominant Sunni power. I would not be surprised if they were involved in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.
3. Just as Egypt has long played both sides against the middle and Iran more recently gained support from Germany and other western nations in addition to China, Turkey wants to play both sides against the middle for their own designs. There is nothing inherently wrong with a nation pursuing national goals.
4. Turkey holds sway with Russia in control of the Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits which control access of the Russian Black Sea Fleet to the Mediterranean Sea.
5. I believe the best way for the USA to deal with Turkey is openly state our goals for the region and firmly work to achieve those ends.

Background: After the Ottoman Empire was dismantled following WWI, Turkish Army officer Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) worked to build a coalition of support and founded the independent Republic of Turkey out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire.
In that respect he worked parallel to Hitler who worked to reunite Germany out of the ruins of WWI.
The only major group that did not benefit from the creation of the middle eastern nations north of the Mediterranean post-WWI was the Kurds. Shia to the east in Iran and Sunni to the west in Turkey and Iraq to the south being a mixture of Shia and Sunni strongholds.

Kurdistan celebrates religious diversity. That makes them anathema to Muslim dominant societies around them. "A common saying is that the Kurds “hold their Islam lightly This may be a result of some connection to the ancient Kurdish faith of Zoroastrianism, or more likely a result of the hundreds of years of oppression that Kurds have felt at the hands of fellow Muslims.
In any case, many Kurdish Muslims do not adhere to strict, traditional rules and interpretations of Islam. The Kurdish people are known for their practice of mysticism and participation in Sufi orders, a practice that is considered heretical by traditional Islam.
The Sunni Kurdish Muslims prescribe to the Shafi’i legal code, which is widespread throughout the world. This has caused some tension when pushed up against Sunni Turks and Sunni Arabs who prescribe to the Hanafi legal code."
