I saw this after the BBC article piqued my interest. There is also a group that is recreating this aircraft with original plans and modern materials. Should be interesting.

Outstanding article about German engineering. We dodged a bullet by a few years as their aviation technology was much greater than the allied forces. The advent of the P-51 was fortuitous.

I agree, of course, however, hat was only because they all did it for psychopaths with zero ethics, and a whole slave labor force at their ready disposal...in the case of the P-51, I'd read that was basically a US airframe with, I think, UK Rolls Royce engine, it was the same with the magnetron vacuum the for microwave radar, when it was sent over here, of read a thought about it being the most valuable piece of cargo to ever arrive in the US, I forget the reference, however, I do recall reading that some time ago....

If memory serves me properly the P-51 was instrumental in three strategic attributes. They were able to escort the bombers to and from the bombing missions. They decimated the Luftwaffe pilots. The Luftwaffe had new air planes but few seasoned pilots to fly them. The P-51s were unleashed on tactical offensive missions which helped to turn the tide of the war.
