PO1 William "Chip" Nagel I cruised to Beirut in 1983 on the USS Puget Sound AD-38 as a dental assistant to recover the remains (medical and dental personnel we're to go ashore to make identifications). But our ship was fired on 5 miles off the beach. So a state of war was declared on the Admiral's Flag Ship and the New Jersey battleship and the Ticonderoga nuclear submarine we're dispatched to rescue us. We sat 3 days off the coast of Beirut being shot at with land misses.
