Cancel the Johnson rifle firing the same ammunition adopted for the 1903. The Marine Corps battle proved the Johnson and wanted more ASAP. The Johnson Rifle could do more in battle than the M 1. The defense industry contractors along with the army brass favorite money maker the M 1 gets the contract.
The 6.8 will take a long time to shake out. Defense contractors, army brass thinking money making again. Testing, parts, retraining the list is long. In addition, think back to Marine Corps camouflage battle dress uniform choice and how many changes of camouflage uniform for the other branches.
The Heckler & Koch, H K 416 is ready now and fires the super squirrel 5.56 mm round and can do more in battle. The H K 416 5.56 mm M27 in the hands of a skilled marksman will be a decided benefit in a fight now. ( Same platform Heckler & Koch 7.62 mm would be to much to dream for. )
Oh, it is so heavy for pantie weights, makes them so tried, kicks so hard and congress cannot have that. The M 16 was developed by Mr. Stoner and the Air Force wanted it for pilots that had to punch out. Broken down the M 16 would fit in the ejection seat kit. Survival and defensive weapon all in one. The Air Force General Curtis Le May had it tested and personally fired it and wanted it to replace the standard issue M 1 Carbine for security personnel right away. The the army brass observed and wanted the South Vietnamese Army soldiers to have the M 16 due the smaller stature of the soldiers to replace the M 1 be issued. Good enough for them good enough for the manufactures making the money. Develop a improved M 14 for infantry or make excuses why the M 16 would be a super rifle put into infantry service ASAP. Men had to be ordered to give up their M 14 for the "Mattie Mattel" "The "Black Rifle" killed many of our own. Men died attempting to get that damned rifle to function.

I can kind of understand the delay. The Marines want it in 5.56, while the army is testing it with the Grendel. I feel it's much better to not have different calibers. Makes Ammo procurement that much easier, and you don't have a troop saying hang on a sec I need to see which bullet fits my rifle.

The Grendel has range but no punch, the 6.8 SPC II has both over the 5.56 and Grendel I know the Grendel has a slight advantage over the 6.8 in range, but if I hit you, I don't want you getting up again.

But in this, Congress is looking at an Infantry man's primary weapon. Do we really need one accurate to 700yds when the average range in a 2-way shoot is 100-150 yds?
