The real King Arthur: why are we so obsessed with trying to solve the mystery?

I've read many fictional accounts of the Authurian legend beginning with Le Morte D'Arthur. The best by far was the Camalud series by Jack Whyte. I recommend them highly. He blends history and legend until the bridge becomes indistinguishable
