I lived for a time in Ft Collins, CO, a small town with a big university. The fire department handled the fireworks display in the city park (yes, "the" city park) and it wasn't their first job. But it was the most thrilling fireworks display I ever saw. One never knew if they were going up, left, right, or at you. Several popped out of their mortars and landed in the pond raising a beautifully illuminated fountain that sent the ducks and geese scattering like sparklers you often see aloft in well-aimed fireworks.

Those were the best displays. Growing up we had the same in East Hartford, CT, the Town did the fireworks. If professional fireworks vendors even existed our town certainly didn't use them back then.

Did do the fireworks in San Francisco in 1969, that was also the day my wife and I announced our engagement. Fireworks were great, but we had other things on our mind.
