I've always admired Gordon.
To my mind, we'll never know what similar types of leaders have been cast-aside in their "infancy" over the last century owing to a "modernized" concept of what makes a good officer.
Eccentrics, those who sometimes "buck the system", or struggle with some rote competencies...but show immense instinct in others; maybe we shouldn't be so quick to see them off.

LTC Eric Udouj
He was a man at the right time in history - and alot of it also was that he was a superb Engineer Officer. hard to imagine an Engineer Officer in the US military being given the opportunities he undertook - or that our system will ever see the abilities in men and women vs a standardized system that never allows them to really be effective.
