I've tried to get on the Pre-positioned ships there for years, but the crusty old fuckers who man them won't give em up.

I remember flying in to Diego Garcia on a C-141 in 1986. We were taking prototype AN/AVS-6 to the Persian Gulf. It was not what I considered a garden spot

LTC Orlando Illi - Wasn't Probably Quite as "Developed" then as it was a Decade Later while I was there. Like SN Greg Wright said the Merchantmen there only leave when there is no other Choice it is Great Duty for all. Be They Merchantmen, Sailors, Marines, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, BOSS Contractors, Aerospace Contractors. 7 Legal Bars Operating on the Island that I can think of and Numerous Ones run out of Barracks Rooms. Eat, Sleep, Work, Dive, Fish, Rinse and Repeat.

21 yrs ago just as I was retiring and applying for a job I was contacted by a rep from allied signal for a job to maintain the vehicles on the ships. you had to sign a 1 yr contract and it paid 12.50 an hour with plenty of O.T. but I had enough time spent away from the family being in a Seabee Battalion. so I took a job with a Boiler service company in North Carolina. got you beat LTC Illi spent 10 months there 73-74 and we flew in on MAC C141's we were the third battalion there and lived in Seahuts.
