Pentagon may stop running state-side schools for military children

I spent 1st and 2nd grade at a base-run school in Norman, Oklahoma and the final two years of high school at Yamato HS which was affiliated with Tachikawa AFB in Japan. The only civilian schools that were better than average were 6th grade in Millington, Tennessee and the first two years of high school at Sunnyvale HS in Sunnyvale, Ca. Sunnyvale HS benefitted from a high enrollment of military dependents from Moffatt Field NAS and from the kids of Lockheed employees. As a Navy brat I attended 6th grade in three different states within one academic year. I say leave it alone --- any budget savings would be at the expense of the well-being of the affected dependents. SSG Robert Webster COL Mikel J. This comes up ever so often. Was not a wise idea the last time it was brought up and is not a wise idea this time around either.
One of the problems is teacher pay just for starters. In some locations this is not an issue but in others it is.
Another issue is curriculum and curriculum quality. This is a major issue in several of the areas where there are DoDEA Schools.
There are other factors, but that's a good start.
One of the reasons that they want to try this at Quantico is because there are also a significant number of both military and federal employee children going to the local schools off base. So that a transition there would not be such a hurdle, nor would Fort Bragg, but there are other factors to consider.
And yes, I was a DoDDS educator overseas. Plus I am very familiar with the Fort Bragg DoDEA schools and the schools in the Cumberland County School District to include schools in Spring Lake and Fayetteville.

Oh, hell no. Hardin County High School has an in-school day care (says something about Kentucky...) I’m happy with Fort Knox High School for my daughter.

my father was station in Albuquerque NM we lived in base housing but bused to local HS
