Order and discipline are essential to military organizations. Without it there is no way they can accomplish their missions. I've seen military units that did not maintain good order and discipline and been a party to the effort to turn it around. The results were striking. If we allow an admitted offender of the highest order to skate on these charges, we are setting a precedent that will bite us in the ass

You an do anything you'd like as long as you're willing to accept the consequences. Everyone in the military has been schooled on duty. I see no reason to reduce his punishment just because he chose to spend his time off with the enemy.
