Obviously a bad call to bring a watermelon on his first day to a station that is predominately black, instead of the traditional donuts or pastry. Firing the guy seems excessive though, I can't help but wonder if there were other factors involved and this was simply the last straw.

Don't like what ifs. And the Probie probably had no idea about the complexion of his fire barn crew.

Firefighters usually volunteer for months or years before they are brought on full time.

Watermelon? Food is food. I don't know why the firing happened, but it sounds like something is rotten in the State of Denmark about this. I'd be glad someone brought in a fruit that fought dehydration and tastes good.

I'm sure that's all it was, a kind gesture. There's no mention when this happened. If it was a hot summer day, spot on choice. If it was the dead of winter, I might even ask him why he didn't bring hot chocolate, as well. OMG, maybe chocolate (which is brown) would be insensitive, too????????????

This is one of the few exceptions I have found where the use of a couple four letter words actually contributes to the message instead of detracting from it. I have nothing to add except an up vote.

I could not help myself. I am sick of this and I get angrier every time this kind of thing happens. Imagine if the roles were reversed...talk about outrage and political condemnation!!!
