I teach my children the same thing: Sometimes it's worth getting in trouble if it means you stop getting pushed around.

My daughter was bullied when she was in the 5th grade by a boy. Not in the teasing way like he liked her but in the verbal abuse and one time he pushed her. I told her that if he laid hands on her again to lay him out however it took and we would deal with it later. Didn't come to that. A friend of ours son (who we call our son) was home from post deployment leave. He went to eat lunch with her at school and that kid sat across from them. He leaned over to him and told her that if he ever talked to her or touched her again he would be back..that is all it took. She was bullied in high school one time and she just laughed in the girls face showing great restraint...she could have dropped her like bad kleenex if she wanted to but she didn't. She immediately went to the office and reported it and the girl got suspended for a week. Never messed with her again. I think that kids that are bullied need to stand up to bullies...I had to when I was growing up and they quit messing with me when I stood my ground.

Told my son the best way to deal with a bully after all other options have failed is to bust them straight in their nose. I told him there would be consequences for his action, but if that is what it took then so be it. Round about 5th grade the time and place came, but only once. He took a 3-day suspension and I told him to sit back, relax and enjoy it.
