Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for sharing the background on Phineas Gage who at age 25 on Sept. 13, 1848, at around 4:30 p.m. had an accident which resulted in "a tamping iron—43 inches long, 1.25 inches in diameter and weighing 13.25 pounds—[shooting skyward, penetrating] Gage’s left cheek, ripped [through] his brain and exited through his skull, landing several dozen feet away."
Of note his personality and behavior changed significantly and he was terminated from employment long before worker compensation laws were enacted.

Studied that case in college. Interesting insight into brain functioning.

This story has always amazed me, along with the guy with a hole in his stomach also caused by an accident, I think. The doctor put an access port of some sort in and watched how his stomach worked. I have no idea how that could have been done and also avoid peritonitis. Nice share this morning, John.
