Funny thing that was that's what my grandpa did. My dad was to white collared for that. My grandpa though was my best friend growing up though.

PFC (Join to see) I have two brothers. We got to learn from the mistakes of others. My dad had a paddle. He used it one time only, on one of my brothers. From then on "Get me the paddle" was the only thing he needed to say and behavior improved instantly. My dad also let me learn lessons the hard way. He was teaching me to cook on the grill. We had the lid on the grill, he handed me the tongs and said open the vent. He was standing there and saw me reach for the metal lid on the grill. He didn't stop me from touching it. I learned real quick about heat transfer through metal. I am not complaining, my dad is great. One of the things he taught me was a love of Scotch Whiskey. He didn't drink often, but when he thought I was old enough he shared it with me. Next year we are taking a trip to Scotland to tour the distilleries.

PFC (Join to see) - My parents were effective in the disciplinary department, encouraged us to try new things, and let us learn from experience. My dad taught me to think critically about things. My mom shared her love of science fiction. She also was inventive with punishment. One night I was being a smart ass, wouldn't shut up, and so she waited until I opened my mouth wide to continue spewing the drivel I was spewing about knowing more in my 16 years than she ever would, and she calmly shot me in the face with dish soap. That will stop a person from talking immediately. I am lucky that I have a strong bond with my parents. I know there are a lot of folks who don't have that. It is a blessing I count every day.

Me too I'm not a big fan of not being able to dicpline ones child because I was hit when I did bad things and now days I'm thankful because it taught me to be a thoughtful person that actions have consequencesthat don't ever say or do anything unless your prepared to accept the concequences. I'm very greatful to my Parent and especially grand parent for being that source of support and discipline that I needed to make who I am.

PFC (Join to see) - SO much truth. Nowadays if you raise your voice to a child, they want to take them away from the abusive environment. Then they want to turn around and tell parents that they are raising a little asshole. Well yeah, when you take away discipline, what are you left with.
