John C. Frémont - Wikipedia

Lots of people visiting Las Vegas hear about Fremont Street, and know it was named after someone. Sometimes, we have to look it up to learn. I did find it interesting that he was the first presidential candidate for a new party in his time....it was the Anti-Slavery Party...also called the Republican Party. The second person to run for President from that party was a guy named Abe Lincoln..... And now you know the rest of the story...for those who heard of Paul Harvey.

John Charles Frémont or Fremont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890) was an American explorer, politician, and soldier who, in 1856, became the first candidate of the anti-slavery Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. During the 1840s, when he led four expeditions into the American West, that era's penny press and admiring historians accorded Frémont the sobriquet The Pathfinder.[1]
