Oh, gosh, let's see now - we have a huge bunch of transgender service members who received commissions and/or signed (re-)enlistment contracts - on whom we have poured in a truly enormous investment in training - and we are just going to tell them not to come in to work tomorrow - they are just gone? What could go wrong? More to the point - all a service member needs to do to be released from their contract is to let command know they are transgender - then they will be released from their service obligation - what could go wrong? So, if we reinstate the draft all it takes is uttering the word transgender - then a conscript is relieved of their service obligation - what could go wrong? Heads of each of the services have declared they will stand by and never abandon our transgender service members - kinda like no man left behind on the battlefield - then the president orders us to not only abandon but permanently exile our transgender service members - what could go wrong? What if a transgender service member recants - what could go wrong? How do we define transgender status for the sake of exile under medical fitness standards? Just anyone who says they are transgender? Anyone who takes hormone replacement therapy? Those who signed some formal legal declaration of transgender status? Do we go back to DADT for our transgender service members? Do we stage Joe McCarthy style secret investigations with testimony under oath to root out the secret members of the transgender cabal - what could go wrong. Do we dismiss service members accused in secret of being transgender - what could go wrong? What if the entire military came out one day wearing yellow transgender star declaring they are all transgender - what could go wrong? Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

1LT Sandy Annala - Actually, if we could get one today, it would make a great deep water diving platform. That and a dorm for kids going to School in Fla for Marine Sciences. You would not have to destroy the tubes, just a little concrete in each to disable their usefulness. Dismount and sell or give the gun away to a museum. and you are done.

1LT Sandy Annala - Many that reside in Trump's base wants to see the military reverted back to status quo. That's my assessment of comments from many pro-military pro-Trump supporters I've encountered on social media.

1LT Sandy Annala - I understand your comment but all Servicemembers should be deployable or face the question of involuntary separation. Why limit that "deployability" requirement to currently serving Transgenders? Or better yet, set up a situation where we're directing leaders to target that element of the military community with that criteria. It's an odd piece of guidance by the White House.

CMDCM Gene Treants - That "missionary position" requirement is already in current UCMJ; we just choose not to enforce something that is difficult to prove. Haha!

Not to stir the pot but in my opinion the transgender folks have been handled poorly. They should not have been lumped in with the gay folks, policy wise as it's two different issues. The Army laid the groundwork for open service by the gay community with the don't ask don't tell policy, giving people time to get used to working with each other and gaining acceptance.
It seems that the transgender folks were thrown in as an after thought and TA-DA the ensuing issues with acceptance. While a raw deal a reset probably isn't a bad idea as someone could develop a coherent strategy. Folks already in, should be grandfathered.

It's the fault of Government to over simplify a problem. Like the history of Japanese internment they also threw into internment camps Chinese and Korean who at the time did not get along with the Japanese at all.
This situation is not related overall it's just an example of how our Government has a bad habit of trying to over simplify a problem.

Much under the "transgender umbrella" is not related either.
I think its time to roll back use of the word transgender and distinguish between all the issues.
Its part of why I am insisting it is not okay to call me transgender or associate me with it or the lgbt at all here.

IMHO, the 'deployability issues' are the biggest red herring. Realistically, those already serving should be grandfathered, and I pray they are.

The suicide rate of transgender people who transition and are accepted and welcomed by society is the same as that of society as a whole. The same would go for service members. A trans service member who is allowed to transition, doesn't face harassment, and isn't being threatened a pink slip by the president via Twitter would have the same suicide rate as any other service member.

CW3 Lindsey Muller - exactly, you hit the nail right on the head. I couldn't have said it better myself. Probably the biggest issue is acceptance, and employment issues follow. If people give us a chance they would find us to be happier healthier more well-adjusted employees. One would see the same thing in military service.
I was never happier, and a harder worker when I finally resolve my own issues. And through a fluke, or a miracle I managed to serve five years in the Army Reserve after my transition. I was in the IRR and did not have a regular troop assignment, but compled drills, schools and training with various units.
Sadly, I believe the president is trying to appeal to a more conservative segment of the GOP political base when in fact they will never support him anyway. Hopefully the final decisions will be left up to Matthis and he will do the right thing.
