Yes, no kidding. Trump expressed the policy. The DoD will need to turn the policy into actionable steps, procedures etc. That is the way it works usually. The statement/tweet is not actionable on it's own. I hope that didn't surprise anyone.

It isn't an executive order it is a policy statement. I am not sure he needs an EO to provide a policy guidance to the DoD. He will need to tell them what he wants them to do, they will craft a policy etc to address and then implement once approved.

No, the president announcing publicly a policy the Pentagon wasn't expecting is NOT how these things usually work.

I think he did it to tear the Band-Aid off so it didn't "leak" out. This also kept the DoD/Pentagon from announcing it and listening to the non stop whining that has ensued, as he knew it would. He is taking the heat from the left and the majority of Americans that agree with him are perfectly fine with it.

It's pretty clear now that despite what Trump claimed in his tweet, that he didn'tt consult with "his" generals and military experts before sending this tweet. Reporting now indicates the Gen Mattis is on vacation and was merely informed of the tweet. You would think that after the fiasco with the rollout of his first travel ban, where he put it out without the Director of Homeland Security seeing the final wording, and none of the departments that would implement the policy having been given a heads up, that he wouldn't repeat that same mistake.

But he did exactly the same thing. None of the military departments knew it was coming and none of them have a clue how and when it will be implemented. Another truly pathetic performance by Trump. SAD!

GySgt John Olson - I'd seen that too. GEn Mattis had asked for a six month delay in implementing the policy so they could further figure out how to implement it smoothly. That wouldn't seem to make sense if he was already recommending to the president that transgender people be banned from serving.

wondering if execution orders for military missions will be tweeted in the future (sarcasm meme)? looks like CJCS blew him off pending hard copy, meaning the kids will have to come out of the nursery and stop fighting long enough to draft a deliverable document, sad
