My grandfather was one of those mandatory observers in the Pacific as well. It ended up killing him 35 years later.

MSgt Jason McClish - He was a gunner in the Navy. My dad's only brother was a Marine however.

I can't find hardly any records of my grandfather whatsoever in military databases, etc. I only have the word from my grandmother since he died 3 years before I was born. I just know he got really sick in the years leading to his death after getting leukemia.
