SGT Michael Thorin she knew what she was doing. It was a just and fair decision. Like you said, she is very lucky she got a honorable discharge.

Thanks for taking the time to write your own thoughts on the case of former Navy intelligence specialist Janaye Ervin who refused and may well still refuse to honor the national colors and the national anthem SGT Michael Thorin
Logically there are two other possible explanations for her actions:
3. She is insane or had a psychotic break which caused her to behave irrationally despite all she has been trained to do.
4. She was paid to do what she did either through cash or kind or blackmailed to publicly reject allegiance to her country.
I think your first option seem mosts reasonable "She knew what she was doing and the punishment she would be given, and wanted to push buttons and try to hide behind a "cause."
In any event I think Janaye Ervin got off easily "Petty Officer Janaye Ervin has fulfilled her obligation of enlistment and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy."
In this day and age the criminal and the tawdry tend to write books which sell to those interested in that sort of thing. I expect that one or more books and one day a movie will be produced about Janaye Ervin. I expect Michael Moore would be interested in producing a movie making Janaye Ervin out to be a heroine.

SGT Michael Thorin
On every single observation I agree with you LTC Stephen F., and I am glad you added the other two reasons for her committing the act. I honestly feel that, had the media not been involved her discharge would be under "Dishonorable" conditions. However, I believe the political and social environments involved pressured the system to go light on her punishment.
Food for thought.
