People use social media for a number of things, before that it was letters to the editor kind of stuff. Strong opinions individuals will make themselves be heard regardless of the time frame in history.

Damn, I wish I had thought of this first. It is a great insight. Truman replaced one of the most beloved Presidents in history and could never live up to his reputation (regardless of whether or not it was deserved). The papers vilified him. They rallied around his opponents. His wife and daughter were treated abominably. Harry fought back. He didn't have Twitter, but he had a "bully pulpit".And yet We survived... Now, if I may paraphrase, "Give 'em hell, Donald!"

SPC John Parmenter - No disagreement from me. I would be a Democrat today if the party was still championed by candidates like Truman. Despite his one major misstep (he announced to the world that the US wouldn't fight to preserve South Korea which led to the Korean War) I consider his a greater President than FDR. However, in his own time, FDR's fans unleashed venom on Harry out of their grief.

CPT Jack Durish - Sir, in my mind Truman's biggest error was an attempt to nationalize the steel industry -- shot down by the Supreme Court.

SPC John Parmenter - I suppose he was overly influenced by the Brits who were busy nationalizing their industry during this period

I confess that I am bothered by some of Trump's tweets.
That said, I have come to the conclusion that he is a chess player in a checker game. His tweets vanish by the next day, but if you pay attention there is an impact days or weeks later that tends to go in his favor.
I'm not a fan of crass behavior. I would prefer better statesmanship. Then again, I'm not in the position facing the challenges daily.

Obama got slammed more than any POTUS in history (including the whole birther thing) and yet kept it classy.
However, I understand the ideological pendulum swing that created what we have now.
