Why do some veterans seem more motivated after they get out? | SOFREP

A lot of it plays in to personality and personal drive. It really easy hard to tell who will succeed after service. The best thing to do is provide opportunities for service members to grab on to something they are passionate about. Find the passion, the success and hard work comes with it.

Probably because the bad memories fade and become overshadowed by the good. Even things that sucked get looked back on with nostalgia. This happens all the time in the Navy. Being on a ship is very demanding and you feel completely burnt out by the time you transfer after a 3-5 year tour. Yet after about 2 years on shore duty, most Sailors start to get bored and begin thinking about how great it was on the ship and can't wait to go back. It's a reoccurring cycle.
