The issue was not combat power. It was never about weapons or the ability to fix and destroy the enemy. The issue was that we were engaged in a defensive war couched as an offensive. We were constrained to South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese had full access to had Laos and Cambodia as resupply lines. Even Air targets were controlled at the White House. You either fight to win or not. We never fought to win; over 50,000 were killed and we ultimately lost South Vietnam

SP5 Mark Kuzinski - What really angered me was when I was at National Defense University and in one of my classes it was revealed that that McNamara actually was approving air campaign targets in the White House with Johnson. How the hell do you win a war when some narcissistic jerk - posing as a Sec Def is approving targets for an operational Commander? We were destined to lose Vietnam as soon as Johnson and McNamara became involved. We lost over 50,000 friends, relatives and colleagues for nothing - nothing

SP5 Mark Kuzinski - my neighbor and High School Classmate (he was 2 years ahead of me). Such a waste of a life in war that the bureaucrats in the Pentagon did not try to win.

Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski that on June 7, 1965 US Army General William C. Westmoreland requested a total of 35 battalions of combat troops, with another nine in reserve.
The Viet Mihn had transformed into the NVA and VC by this time.
They were engaged in total warfare which they learned in part form us in WWII. They defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu the decade prior.
Hopefully we are finally learning our lessons and will engage in total war against radical Islam wherever its raises it despicable head.
Here is an image of General W.C. Westmoreland the year prior from Vietnam.; 1954 Viet Mihn assault Dien Bien Phu; 1965-06-6 U.S. soldiers are on the search for Viet Cong hideouts in a swampy jungle creek bed at Chutes de Trian, some 40 miles northeast of Saigon, South Vietnam
