DuffelBlog is a spoof, but the story has more truth to it than most would think.
During my assignments as MP Operations Officer or Provost Marshal I received more complaints than I can count about some officer's spouse who did not get saluted upon entering the gate. I would tactfully tell them that they were not entitled to a salute but concede that the MP should have saluted the vehicle occupant because he/she did not know for sure if the driver was an officer or spouse.
When I was in Korea as the MP Brigade Commander and Provost Marshal, US Forces Korea, I was working the main gate at Yongsan Garrison on Christmas Day (I replaced the MP so he to go eat the big Christmas meal in the dining facility) when a young Captain entered the gate as I waved him on after seeing his decal. He almost passed the gate when he abruptly stopped, stuck his head out of the window and yell "Don't you salute Captains?"... I walked up to his car, where he could see the colonel eagle on my cap and said "Not since I was a damn Lieutenant, Captain". He apologized and moved on. :-)

The look on his face was priceless... I wish I had taken a picture of it. I think his life (or, at least, his career) passed in front of him.

This is so sad. I so righting pointed out the extreme lack of 2LTs saluting 1LTs. Where will this end.

These hard hitting question are tearing at the fabric of the heart of the Army. If we don't ask these then we are no better then something really bad.

You know, I can think of a certain LT in our unit that has a bit of an affection for numbers who debated saluting my wife! Sadly enough....not kidding.
