Col Bass is correct (even though she's hyping her book) and her points are on target.
I worked as a magazine editor for 4 years. It honed my writing capabilities significantly. I wrote, edited, and evaluated fact and fiction articles almost every day. These skills served me well during the remainder of my Air Force and civilian careers.
Here's a few hints about good writing:
-Know your reader or audience so you can shape your presentation for them
-Determine the purpose of the prose before you start writing
-Keep it simple. Short, clear paragraphs and sentences work. Never force the reader to wade through a swamp of Government gibberish to find your point.
-To write good reading, read good writing. Always have a well written fiction or non-fiction book on your phone or tablet to help fill downtime.
-Spell check doesn't catch everything. If accuracy, grammar, and spelling are critical, read the document backwards. You'll be surprised at the errors you'll spot.

The book "On Writing Well" taught me these things. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. Could recommend any other good books improving my writing skills?

Writing is a skill like any other. It takes a lot of practice and a lot of reading to create a formidable style!

I think she is spot on. Using powerful and effective words means learning which words are the most effective. She would be a great mentor. Many people need a mentor, at least in the beginning. I would not mind buying a copy of the book to learn more. I might even recommend it to students. I have often recommended books to students to help them with resumes and cover letters. From what I gathered I could use this book to request grant money as well!
