I remember listening to radio traffic during a battle in Vietnam. The RTO responded that the CO was dead when the battalion commander asked to speak to him. The same response came when the battalion commander asked for the XO, platoon leaders, and top NCOs. "Who's in charge?" the LTC asked in frustration. "No one, sir." There was a pause before the LTC spoke again. "Well, someone has to lead and that's going to be you, son" he said softly. "Yes, sir." Yeah, that's how the military uses entrepreneurs. We expect that any service member can and will step up to the plate and take the lead when there's a job to be done. Interestingly, we have fought wars with others, notably Germany and Japan, during which units became ineffective when their leaders were killed or severely wounded. However, American GIs always could be counted on to take the initiative. So, is the military creating the entrepreneur or taking advantage of an inherent entrepreneurial spirit inherent in Americans?
