Nothing is more captivating than a good story well told. We never become jaded to them, not even after being inundated daily with a barrage of stories on TV and in films and books. I'll always stop and listen to someone's story if it's honest and well told. They can be as short as a one line joke or as long as an epic series on TV. Makes no difference. Service members are great storytellers primarily because they are so honest. They were there. They did that. They survived to tell the story. If not, their buddies remember and tell the tale for them.

I think this is also why veterans make great entrepreneurs because our storytelling abilities come with passion and people understand where we come from. We have a grit about us that civilians don't.

Sgt Eric Mitchell - I would also add that not only do "civilians" not understand our "grit" and "passion", they don't understand our - out of the box capability. For those civilians who claim to think outside the box they actually don't - in my humble opinion!
Good stories begin with listening and being engaged by the speaker, vs the listener being selfish enough to believe what someone is saying is not important and they, the listener to the story, are being somehow tolerant. I would argue that in today's 8 second sound-bite society, that good stories with subtle but important messages are being ignored by those who truly need to hear, and not just listen to them.

I was lucky enough to have received ten months of training with the same guys that I got off the bus with for BCT in 1965 Ft. Lewis due to the build up of the 4th Div,during that time I met guys from all over the U.S. We had wannabe gangsters from Chicago,Cowboys from Texas, surfers from California, farmers from Iowa and just about everything in between ,for a kid from Boston who had not been outside his neighborhood these guys were amazing with their stories of places I had only read about in books, later on we all had our own stories of that green place but those we kept to ourselves for a long time.
