Switch the table, would the Canadians have let U.S. citizens in without the proper visas? As a medical professional myself, I know that working across even state lines can get complicated. International lines even more so.

MSG Mark Million - Like I said, I found this disappointing and wonder if this could have been avoided or prepared better. Please stop trying to explain what the President's job is and presume he has no accountability for the actions of his departments that design and implement policies he signs off on. That wasn't the point of any of my questions. If you want to tack this up to incompetency of leaders in the immigration department to include the new head that was appointed by Trump then I'm good with that as well.
MSgt Kurt Stover The new people in leadership positions is getting old. What that says is those people aren't listening to their staff or low level workers with all the knowledge and current experience. I just hope they can resolve the issue through intergovernmental agencies coordination sooner than later.

Back in the early 90s I worked for a Canadian company both them and me crossed the boarder routinely no visas' needed. On my way to a monthly routine meeting I was pulled aside in the Toronto Air Port informed I was working in Canada and needed a visa. I responded that I was just in for a meeting... no go. Purchase a work visa or return to the US on the next flight. The visa was purchased on the spot. My late arrival at Corporate was noted. After explaining what happened the CEO who operated a company in Port Huron and moved people up and back concluded that it was a scaled up border/labor dispute between the US and Canada. One year later the visa was removed from my Passport and never asked for again.

MSgt Kurt Stover - low levels workers? What is that? LOL? I find it somewhat humorous that a "low level" worker at the border (GS5, making $16.00 an hour) has the power to deny entry to the US. i think it's great.

Canada can deny entry based upon all of the following.
You may be denied entry to Canada due to any of the following reasons:

1. Denied for Security Grounds
An officer has reasonable grounds to believe you are engaging, will engage or have engaged in acts which breach security
Involvement in an organization that would harm others, including violence or terrorism
History of human or international rights violations
Spying or gathering information for the benefit of the country of origin

2. Refused for Criminal Grounds

Enter Canada with DUI
A conviction outside Canada must be equivalent to an offence in Canada and may be subject to inadmissibility
Common convictions that will likely impair prohibit an individual from entering into Canada include: impaired driving convictions like DUI or DWI, reckless or dangerous driving, common assault, street racing, resisting a police officer, any drug related offences, DUI, DWI and theft or fraud.

3. Denied Entry to Canada for Health Grounds
Every foreign national upon entry into Canada requires a medical certificate; indicating they are not inadmissible on health grounds base don the last medical examination (previous 12 months)
Any health conditions that is likely to cause or endanger health and safety of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
A health condition that, if treated, will excessively burden Canadian health or social services

4. Refused to Canada for Financial Grounds
There is a lack of resources to provide for yourself and your family members
You must satisfy an officer that sufficient arrangements for care and support are in place, which does not involve any social assistance.

5. Denied Entry to Canada for Misrepresentation

Any material facts related to a current application which is either withheld or misrepresented, is grounds for inadmissibility into Canada. This includes:
Providing false information or withholding information
Fraudulent documentation

I know that we require some of this, however I also know that our policies are much more liberal.

Enforcement of the current visa standards is the letter of the law. However with a little forethought, senior border officials could have been empowered to make informed exemptions within the letter of the law.

No new policy implemented will work without problems, empowering specific individuals to apply on the spot corrections could easily have been part of the legsl implementation of that law.
