CPT Lawrence Cable - If you're firing fully jacketed ball ammunition, caliber's supreme. But if we don't restrict ourselves to one type of ammunition, caliber becomes less important:

1SG(P) (Join to see) - I understand that, I'm a handgun hunter from way back, or was before bifocals. My personal carry is .380 using Hornady Critical Defense. The .45 comment was about half in jest, but as you pointed out, large calibers are supreme if you are shooting hardball ammo.

CPT Lawrence Cable - My Colt Gold cup 1911 is the most comfortable and accurate gun I use. what I give up in magazine capacity is made up by accuracy and bullet weight

I shot expert with the beat up old 1911's I was issued every time. I currently don't own a 1911, but my Taurus 24/7 45 ACP has some advantages over the old 1911, DA/SA, composite frame, and higher capacity magazines. OTOH, I agree with you that the 1911 fits my hand better.

In that case, fuck them both. Get the FN-X. Hammer fired, the position safety (fire, safe, decock) and probably weighs less since it's a single stack (also makes the grip smaller for those "petite" females firing one handed).

Never shot one but if the water cooler commandos can be believed I'm not sure I want to. From what I've read it's an over-hyped, under-producing gimmick round. Seems like the military would be better off just using a 9mm +P. Like I said though; I've never shot one.

Really? At this point Glock is too big to fail, and they have an almost total monopoly on the LE market. So the Army doesn't want their pistol. I don't see Colt p**sing and moaning over H&K being the Corps' new rifle brand, and Colt's marketing depends almost entirely on government contracts.

Colt also lost the contract for the M4; the new contact was awarded to FNH.
