Do not say anything for or against the king. Don't talk politics. It can get you years in Prison. Trust me, if you go to Thailand, don't discuss it. My friend knew the belated King and knows the Prince soon to be King. He worked as a FAO for the Thai Embassy and he worked with the Royalty when there were at Fort Bragg in 1980.

Laws to protect Thai royalty stifle discourse
Recent high-profile lèse-majesté cases have made examples of those who have criticized the monarchy.

That is interesting. I expect tourists should mourn with the nation as it mourns SSgt (Join to see). I concur with you that it is a sad day form supporters of the deceased King.

SGT (Join to see) PO2 Ed C. SSgt (Join to see) We have been told by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the US Embassy basically the same stuff mentioned in the above article. Be respectful. The biggest thing they stressed was the Lese majeste laws. It is okay and encouraged to express sympathy, but that is it.
