1. compare prices from actual airline you see on: the Auto Club (AAA) Expedia or Priceline. I have found in Canada, that, on occasion the tickets were much cheaper from the AAA website.

2. Check rental car price on priceline or expedia often less than the USAA link to Avis, Hertz and Dollar Rent a Car. This weekend, I had reserve from Palm Springs Avis a 2016 Hyundai 4 door Optima for $15 a day compared to $24 a day from USAA. taxes and city fees are much higher than this. Its all based on the base rental rate. I rented it Friday-to Monday. Be a member of Avis or Hertz preferred customer plan. Often you get an upgrade and you are in the system and you save about 4 signatures and the sales pitch for insurance you don't need. Putting rental car on gold or platinum visa/mastercard includes the collision damage waiver deductible on your rental car.

3. Go in uniform, have CAC card. You get the free benefit for not paying for checked bags. Board first if its a US owned Airline. Reservists, if asked, tell them you are on orders even if its just a weekend drill you fly to once a month. I was put in business class by Westjet, A canadian Carrier, for free but this only happens once in a while. Canada gives VIP to troops. I live in Canada.

4. Buy tickets no later than one week before the flight. Be there early so you can park in cheaper parking lot that often charges you even less if you make a reservation and payment online.
