People have been killing each other much much longer. Should we now make that legal?
I have visited Ellis Island. The stories there of families being separated, some allowed to enter some not are very sad.
In the end we need to define what is required to enter our country, then enforce it. I believe it is totally wrong to reward the ones who break the law an enter illegally.

Indeed! And why is it that many countries like Mexico feel that our Immigration Laws should benefit them, yet they don't reciprocate. Perhaps we should adopt Mexican Immigration Law and apply it to every Mexican citizen that is here illegally!

I don't think you're making this case, but since you used it I'm inclined to respond to your first point. It doesn't matter that it's been going on for a long time; there is an ebb and flow depending on who's in charge (pick you level of government and we can make points pro/con).
It is a problem that needs to be fixed for the sake of law breakers, for the sake of immigrants and the sake of businesses and consumers. In short, citizens.
A country without a border is not a country...

If the ONLY way they know how to seek a better life is to scoff at our immigration law and violate our national sovereignty, and then refuse to assimilate into our culture and demand we accommodate them, then we shouldn't feel bad in the least to return them to wherever it was from which they came.
The vast majority of illegals come here for their own personal financial gain, and not because they have a desire to integrate into American culture and society.
