It's best not to confuse Islam with Islamism. That would be akin to confusing Christianity of today with Christianity of the Inquisition. What is interesting is that while Christianity has adjusted to modernity, fundamental Islamism has thrown up barriers to it.

One of my interpreters in Afghanistan fled in 1970 to the US prior to the Islamic Revolution. When he returned to work there 40 years later he did not recognize his country.
