Many legends are really nothing more than lost lore. Before my first wife destroyed my library I had several antique books, one being a grade school history book published in about 1826. It mentioned Roman burial sites in Tennessee and Texas as well as stories of Norsemen camping on the Northeast Coast of North America. Much of this knowledge was "discovered" in the 1940's. I remember learning about it in school in the 1940's and 50's. Of late, I've been studying the history of the Chinese Treasure Fleet that circumnavigated the world in pre-Columbian times. There is even evidence that Magellan used copies of Chinese charts to locate the route he followed including the straits at the tip of South America named for him.
