Sad but unsurprising this news the domestic terrorist Micah Johnson was booted out of the Army for various offense including keeping an unauthorized MK-19 grenade and somebody else's medicine in his room on an Afghanistan base in 2014 SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. He seems to have been an unstable individual based on his service record and the police reports we have seen.
It is unfortunate that he learned how to fire military weapons in the Army. If a psych evaluation had screened him out the shooting of so many policemen and bystanders in Dallas might have been avoided.
The 40mm grenade may be more stable than the 40mm M203 grenades but I don't it. When we fired them in the early 1980s they were notorious for misfires and early explosions. They are designed to arm after rotating a set number of times when they pass through the rifled barrel of the M203 or MK19. I remember a safety NCO running off the range at Graf after he had some shrapnel in his neck because he stood up while he cajoled another NCO to fire the M203 at the M203 range at Graf.
I hope and pray that the Army and USMC are doing a good job at screening out unstable people from military training.

CSM Charles Hayden
SGT Robert George Back when: 'my' LT's, officer's wooden barracks was visited by the MPs after 'loud noises' were reported. LT W---- opened the building' sentry door wearing only his jocky shorts. The MPs did not notice the Artillery simulator hidden in the "pouch".
