It does remind me of the fall of the Peacock Throne in Iran. The Shah repressed the Muslim extremists with extreme prejudice causing Jimmy Carter to help architect his fall. The fundamentalist Islamic clerics stepped into the vacuum and we now live with the result. It will be interesting to see if the same chain of events occur in Turkey. Iranian women, once relatively liberated, were subjected to the harshest constraints of fundamental Islam. Will that occur in Turkey? We'll just have to wait and see

Find different sources of information. Try and get different views, and written form is usually more accurate and easier to see the political skew. Most American media are at least skewed a little to the left. (IMHO) Back in the day, all I had was the Stars and Stripes. Today, with social media and electronic blogs, and every other source of information, it is a lot easier to keep informed. It is also really easy to fall prey to heavy agenda blogs without realizing it, as they dress it up as real news.

What's great about this place is the experience you can read about here. I read about people's experience like CPT Durish and then look up the historical reference or operation. Like SPC Griggs said, you need more than a single source of intel but you also need perspective or a model to place your observations into. Most schools don't teach that anymore but military schools will give you a frame of reference or a model to use to interpret a situation. That's another reason why I like to read stories from military people.

MAJ Charles Blake - Agreed. Critical thinking is a lost skill. The simple ability to objectively look at something and think about the possible outcomes and how they might effect you, your family, your community, your country in both the short and long terms, and then deciding on a course of action should be taught from day one in school. But, that might lead to independent thought. We can't have that, now can we?

He is 100% correct. The west will soon regret the day. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but soon enough they will be an authoratarian dictatorship, and then what will nato do? As long as they are conducting islamic religious tests it's ok for our president.

It reveals that you had better understand how much the civilian population supports you. And your fellow military had better be in the majority. Punishment will be dealt out severely as a warning to future attempts.
