PO1 William "Chip" Nagel Military tunneling goes way back to the early Roman times as what we would call spider holes from the Vietnam War days were used against Roman legionnaires. When Rome was on the defensive the large underground aqueduct system was utilized in the defense of Rome, as well as to evacuate fleeing leaders.
It is not surprising that ISIL would use tunnels since we had air superiority and they new we had intel surveillance over their occupied areas and their nodes of control.

CSM (Join to see) - it should be for US Dipomats. Paul Bremmer did not listen to the retired army General who was his aide and he did not listen to the pleas of the Iraqi Generals asking not to fire him and most of the Saddam era Iraqi Army. He did not listen and a few hours later the IEDs started.
