Another glimpse of what happened can be found in the documentary, "1945: The Savage Peace." It gives us a shocking glimpse into Europe after WWII.

My mother is German and my great uncle Otto was a soldier in the German Army in WWII while my father's family served in the Army and Navy during the same war. All my fathers family returned from the war but uncle Otto was MIA on the Russian front. My mother was raised for several years in refugee camps in Germany after her family lost all their land and property to the Russians as they pushed West. There are many stories she has shared and it is good to see some information shared on that other aspect of the war.

MAJ L. Nicholas Smith Sir, My family had a similar situation. My grandfather and his parents fled Germany for the US in 1933 because they were socialists. The rest of his family stayed in Germany. We had 14 members who served in the German Army during WWII, and only 5 came home again. My great-uncle Werner was captured during the fall of Berlin and spent until 1953 in a Russian POW camp. When I completed Marine Boot Camp, I went to visit him again in Bielefeld. He started to tell me stories about his time in the war and time as a POW. His family was shocked that he was telling me stuff that they had never heard before. When asked why he was telling me. "He is military and can understand." I truly treasure the time I spent with him, and I learned so much about life. It makes me grateful for where and how I grew up.
