Great article and a must read for anyone separating within the next year. There are so many issues that factor into where to live when you leave the service and this gives a good fact based analysis to those who are completely open on where to settle.

A big factor for Florida is going to be the weather. And although you personally may not like the weather (I don't) your family and friends more than likely do. So this cuts down on your travel as you are always having family visit. Easy to get grandkids to call/visit when you live near a beach/Disney, etc. Florida is also the destination for a bajillion non-military retiree's as well. So your medical care is such that Florida's nickname is "God's waiting room." Florida is geared for retirees.

Active military have a good presence in Florida with several large Naval and Air bases. Plus SOCOM is in the South of Florida. Just over the border in Kings Bay, Georgia you have the massive Submarine base. I'm an "acts of service" kind of guy and I enjoy taking care of people, hosting people, etc. So I love being visited by virtually all of my family and my wife's foreign family. And its fairly cheap as it costs nothing to sit on a beach that your snow-bound family members dream about all year.
