I remember guys who had a coin size circle cut into their shower shoes, so they wouldn't get caught without one in the shower. My memory is that there weren't all that many challenges, unless you knew someone had forgotten theirs, as the cost of being wrong could be high. Most rounds were bought when someone would accidently drop their coin like when they were taking money out of their pocket and the coin would slip out of their pocket and hit the floor. I don't know what the coins were actually made of, but they all seemed to have the same particular sound when they hit the floor, and everyone was attuned to it. So usually you would hear that distinctive sound; the bar would go instantly quiet; then you would hear an "aw shit" from the guy who dropped it, followed by the air being filled with that distinctive ring of everyone else dropping their coins.

A great tradition that brings back lots of good memories.

Thank you for sharing, LTC Michael Mathews! I don't remember there ever being many coins while I was serving in Vietnam. There are so many traditions link to being in the military that civilian don't understand or have knowledge of. Being in the military allowed me to meet some great guys and establish a bond that is like to other.

I'm sad at not having one and I've never seen one at a military show to purchase.
