I left the Navy in 1984, attended college for a little over a year, and then re-enlisted in 1987 when it appeared that my mother passed away. I was going to make a career out the Navy, but after a CTA1 sat on my paperwork for a few months rather than send it in to DC, at the request of my detailer, I became upset and decided to call it quits. I then served in the reserves until 1995.

Western Pacific
Only hit ports in Hawaii and Philippines due to fire aboard that killed 6 shipmates and injured many more due to smoke inhalation. You can Google USS Ranger fire 1983 for more information, although the information makes the incident sound better than it really was.
