Should the Army track senior NCOs career fields separately?

What I am referring to here is should the Army track our senior NCOs in the same manner that the Marine Corps does? When a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) in the Marines is considered for promotion to E-8, they are considered along two different career tracks. If selected the Marine will either become a Master Sergeant (Operations) or a First Sergeant (Command). From this point in their career they will stay operations or command and not change over. When that E-8 is considered for E-9, they maintain that same track; the Master Sergeant to Master Gunnery Sergeant and the First Sergeant to Sergeant Major. The E-8s in the Army are often laterally promoted between Master Sergeant and First Sergeant, and on occasion from Command Sergeant Major to Sergeant Major.

Another interesting aspect of the Marine Corps system is that First Sergeants and Sergeant Majors are assigned to all units throughout the Marine Corps, not just within their MOS. This provides outside experience and knowledge to the organization.

So, should the Army (or Air Force / Navy if their system is different) adopt this system of managing our senior NCO career fields?
