What is the difference between rank restoration and being promoted?

I was recently demoted from E-3 to E-2 and I’m curious about how my TIG will work once I’m promoted. Will my DOR return to what it previously was or will it reset?

Rank restoration is when you appeal the reduction and win. You get your rank restored with the original DOR.
If you did not win an appeal, you were reduced to E2 with a new DOR, and when you are eligible, you will be advanced to E3 with a new DOR.

If your punishment is set aside then it will revert back to the original DOR. Setting aside is done as part of the UCMJ process. If you are advanced through the promotion process you DOR will be the effective date of the new advancement. TIG is computed for you current DOR.
