What do you mean it will have no effect on your career? Need a lot more context to answer this. It's almost got to have some effect to even worry about falsifying it

It would depend entirely on context, situation reason and what else was going on. Something like a counseling date on an OER woud probably not bend me out of shape too much, but I woud always ask the senior leader about it and my response woud be based on who it was an d what th reason was.

Talk to your peers and 1SG to seek advice. With them you can give more details and get better feedback.

True story. A general thought his boss was doing something illegal or immoral. The general confronted his boss and went to IG. IG found it not to be illegal and the junior officer was forced into retirement. You have to be really careful is all I am saying.

Saw one comment related to getting hosed taking it to the IG. However "fraud" is in their charter. You don't want it to be frivolous. The IG takes a look and steers it into the correct Puka for corrective action as they have no line authority. If you get hammered afterwards, then there's a potential it was due to misconduct (whistle blower triggers apply). So do you choose the blue pill or the red pill?

If there is a regulation or law that is flawed it should be dealt with. End-runs postpone addressing the problem, and create an environment where it is "OK" to play loose with the truth.

I'm going to put forth a position that I kind of support, but not whole-heartedly. My knee jerk reaction without knowing the context, and the senior leaders intent, is to report it. But, the law of unintended consequences: I may be throwing a good leader under the bus for no good reason. Or I may be demanding that you throw yourself under the bus for no good reason.

I despise moral relativism, but that doesn't mean it isn't the smartest course in some cases. How's that for a politician's answer to a straight forward question?

For me personally I cannot just let it go. Integrity was and still is a big part of who I am. If I were to knowingly let a lie move forward it would bother me and then I would not feel good when the question would be asked, and it will.

In general, don't storm in assuming it was on purpose. There are a lot of you and one of him/her. The item may have been for someone else. Simply use your integrity to fix the incorrect data. You do not need to be the IO, CID, FBI, or CIA. You do need to make sure the data is correct. You assume it won’t be harmful to your career, however you never know when the next retention board is or how deep it will go. You should never give anyone any chance to question your integrity. Ever. What may seem like nothing now, always has potential to snowball.

Shot in the dark... he didn't do quarterly counseling with you or didn't receive a support form from you, but your OER says he did? Really need more details to provide an intelligent response. Few things in the military are so black and white that I could give a general answer to a question like this.

In my case I was sent to a location that was "too dangerous " for the investigators to go to before I even knew anything was going on

After I was commissioned, I found out that while I was an E4 my company CO had falsified my record (ie flagged me for PT failure even though I was on profile for knee surgery and was begging to take a PT test every drill. He kept telling me I couldn't take it until my profile expired.) just so I would not make the E5 list and he could promote one of his PT studs who was behind me in points. I figured it wasn't worth the hassle by that point.
